Over the last few months, we’ve been gathering some of hottest gear to hit the outdoors and recreation market for an in-the-field test of how these products would perform in the elements. And by elements, we mean the rugged terrain of the Cascade Mountains.

In early June, we set out for a weeklong adventure at Denny Creek Campground as our testing site. In hindsight, maybe early June was a little bit too early. The night before our reservation, which was secured a year prior, high winds in the Snoqualmie Pass area knocked down several large trees.

As a result, Denny Creek campground was temporarily closed. Thankfully no one was hurt, except for our feelings, which we quickly swallowed as we carried on to Nason Creek Campground—near Lake Wenatchee.

The rain followed, but so did the gear. Here’s our review:

The Solo Stove Bonfire + Stand is built for the backyard and beyond, including your favorite campground. The Bonfire + Stand only weighs 20 pounds and includes a free carrying case, which allowed us to take our fire pit from the backyard directly to the campground.

In our first night under the stars, the Bonfire + Stand was a perfect complement to our riverfront campsite. Its portability allowed us to set it up right at the water’s edge.

Bonfire’s ultra-efficient burn turned our kindling into flames within minutes. Startup wasn’t just fast, it was easy. The wood-burning flames were 400° hotter than conventional fires, which eliminated a lot of the smoke and creating fine ashes at the end for an easy cleanup.

The Bonfire’s unique features such as the 360° Signature Airflow Technology, produced low smoke while the double-walled design offered superior airflow and a prime secondary burn. We loved it.

If you’re planning to use the Bonfire at home on your deck, have at it. The Solo Stove Bonfire comes with a Bonfire Stand that helps protect heat-sensitive surfaces.

The Solo Stove Bonfire is versatile and burn-ready whenever you are, no matter the occasion. It retails at $249.99 and has an average review of 4.9 stars with 10,285 reviews. Get outdoors and make sure to get your Bonfire + Stand this summer.

For over 40 years, Nathan has provided best-in-class essentials designed to help runners (and now hikers) enhance and improve their performance, mile after mile and year after year.

Nathan released its new Crossover Pack series, which is designed for full-day hybrid adventures. We got our hands on the Crossover 15L and put it to the test on the Nason Ridge Trail, a 21-mile hike that traverses Nason Ridge in the Central Cascades.

We loaded the pack with 15 liters of water, snacks, extra layers of clothes, rain gear, and a Bear Grills survival knife. As a runner, the pack felt comfortable enough for a bounce-free journey should I have a need for speed.

The Crossover Pack series is available in the Crossover 5L, Crossover 10L and Crossover 15L.

Our Crossover 15L pack had two 45-degree water bottle holders for easy access to water without taking our pack off; front strap pockets for our phone and keys; and a bottom stash pocket for our light jacket and rain gear.

The Nathan Crossover 15L was designed with moisture-wicking and stretch-woven fabric; chafe free binding materials; and breathable mesh shoulder straps. With adjustable sternum straps and a removable waist strap, the pack securely fit to my back. The large, easily accessible pockets made our hike enjoyable by eliminating unnecessary stops to grab gear.

If you’re hitting the trail, Nathan hydration packs and vests are essential items to have for running, hiking, mountain biking and any other activity that requires you to be on the move and stay hydrated.

Hydration packs are best suited for activities that require you to bring along extra items like clothing and energizing snacks. The Nathan Crossover 15L pack retails for $125.00. It’s a perfect complement for any hiking adventure—short or long.

Since 1990, Napier Outdoors has been leading the vehicle camping tent industry in design, innovation, and versatility. Not only do they lead it—they started it.

Napier has been creating convenient and flexible camping solutions to help keep you high and dry for almost 30 years. We got our hands on the Sportz SUV Tent with Screen Room (Model 84000) and field tested it within the harsh elements of the Central Cascades.

Napier Outdoors Sports SUV Tent

With rain during five of the seven nights, the vehicle camping tent did not disappoint.

The Sportz SUV Tent with Screen Room quickly transformed our Honda CRV into a safe and comfortable home away from home. It seamlessly connected to the cargo area of our CRV and provided a spacious 10-foot by 10-foot ground tent area for a queen-sized air mattress, in addition to a 6-foot by 7-foot screen room for our 95-pound German Shepherd.

There were two large doors and three mesh windows as well as two overhead skylights, which were fantastic when the rain stopped. The Sportz SUV Tent with Screen Room also included a gear loft, gear pocket and lantern holder. Even though it was attached to the hatchback of our CRV, it never felt like we were camping from the back of the car.

The simple pole hub design allowed for effortless set up in under 10 minutes, while the large 6-foot by 6-foot extendable awning provided us with shade and shelter from the light rain.

The universal vehicle sleeve fits all CUVs, SUVs and minivans. The Sportz SUV Tent with Screen retails for $459.99. It has an average review of 4.97 with 30 reviews. This vehicle tent is perfect for a quick get-away or even an overnight concert trip to the Gorge Amphitheatre.

Built for women and by women, the new Britt X Ultra Light Ripstop from Dovetail Workwear is a mighty, multi-functional pant designed for getting dirty—whether it’s digging in the garden, traveling the world or hiking in the mountains. My wife was the field tester for these pants.

The ultra-light, ultra-breathable pant comes in two colors: Flax and Lichen Green. Sizes range from 000-24 and inseams range from 28-34 inches. The new EZWaist™ offered comfort and give for bending and reaching, while a crotch gusset design allowed more room for squatting. My wife loved these pants so much, she wore them several days in the field.

The Britt X Ultra Light Lichen Green Ripstop has 13 pockets including two zip pockets for essentials, two tool loops, and reinforced front pockets to minimize wear and tear. The pants have a reinforced knee, and they’re resistant to water and stains.

These pants retail for $99. It has an average 4.6 rating with 71 reviews. If you’re an active female outdoors enthusiast, make sure to get a pair of these pants. You won’t be disappointed.

The MoonShade is a portable vehicle awning that offers reliable coverage—day or night—to your outdoor adventure. We had a ton of rain at our campground, so the MoonShade was a real trip saver.

The vehicle awning sets up easily. There are a variety of anchoring systems that will attach to almost any sturdy structure. We attached it to the back of our Coachman Nova Class B camper van. When extended, the MoonShade provided 9-feet by 7-feet of coverage.

The MoonShade was high customizable and had different setup options for hard or soft ground, including windy and non-windy days. On the windy days, it held its ground.

It offers durable construction using lightweight materials, making the shade heavy duty—not heavy. The packable design and easy attachment make it easy to set up and pack down in almost any environment. When not in use, the Moonshade packed down tight and weighed only eight pounds, which was about the size of a yoga mat.

The vehicle awning is also compatible with just about every vehicle. It can be rear mounted or attached on either side of your vehicle, regardless of height and size. We used our MoonShade on both our Honda CRV and Class B camper, which was built on a Dodge Promaster 3500 chassis.

The MoonShade retails at $350 with an average 4.7 rating from 203 reviews. Make sure to include the MoonShade for you next outdoor adventure, regardless of the weather.
